Nazmi Şahin, President of the Building Inspection and Earthquake Engineering Association, who stated that there was no collapse, deflection or cracking in the buildings that had received building inspection services before the Elazığ earthquake, spoke to AKŞAM.
ANKARA

In his statement to AKŞAM, Nazmi Şahin, President of the Building Inspection and Earthquake Engineering Association, said that, across Turkey, 758,838 buildings and a total area of 1,157,677,727 square metres had been inspected with authorisation obtained from the Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation. He explained that these inspections were carried out by 1,721 building inspection firms, 319 laboratory firms, 29,969 expert architects and engineers and 64,863 assistant control staff engineers. Şahin said, “In the magnitude 6.8 earthquake, our buildings that had received building inspection services suffered no collapse, deflection or cracking.” Noting that 2,576 buildings in Elazığ and 1,963 buildings in Malatya had been inspected by expert engineers, Şahin made the following observations in summary:

DAMAGE: STRUCTURAL DEFECTS

“As a result of the examinations carried out in the earthquake regions, it was determined that the damage and defects occurring in the structures arose, alongside ground problems, from various workmanship, material and structural-system problems and technical defects. The greatest deficiency occurring in the buildings is the situations stemming from the structural system. One of the greatest problems the regulation identifies regarding structures to be built in disaster areas is the major error of failing to place stirrups at sufficient spacing in the load-bearing system elements by not complying with the rules.”

THE NUMBER OF THOSE HAVING EARTHQUAKE DURABILITY TESTS PERFORMED IS RISING

Applications by citizens living in fear of the expected earthquake in Istanbul to firms that perform the “Earthquake Durability Test” have increased. In the report prepared as a result of the tests, which are completed in a single day, the conclusion of whether your home is earthquake-resistant emerges. Experts drew attention to the fact that 400,000 of the 600,000 buildings currently in Istanbul are not safe.

67 PERCENT OF HOMES IN ISTANBUL ARE COVERED BY DASK

67 percent of homes in Istanbul are covered by compulsory earthquake insurance. Mete Güler, Chairman of the Board of DASK, said, “Across Turkey the compulsory earthquake insurance coverage rate is around 54 percent. The number of policies in Istanbul has reached 2.5 million.”
