Following the earthquake that occurred in Düzce, the fact that there was no collapse of buildings did not go unnoticed. Nazmi Şahin, President of the Building Inspection and Earthquake Engineering Association, came to Düzce and met with the building inspection firms. Noting that the firms inspect millions of square metres of area across the province, Şahin said: “The building inspection system proved successful in Düzce. We are inspecting an active construction area of 4 million 660 thousand square metres. To date you have inspected 16 million 697 thousand square metres of construction. You have obtained building permits and occupancy permits. In the earthquake we experienced on 23 November, there was no loss of life or property in these construction areas we inspected. There were no structural damages. There may be minor glass breakage or plaster cracks. The main theme of our law is to ensure the safety of life and property. We saw this in the Düzce earthquake as well. We came to see just how successful this is by experiencing it in Düzce too. 159 inspector engineers and 590 assistant controllers are working in the field. They must have done their jobs well, since our buildings sustained no damage. We have one test: do the buildings we inspect collapse in an earthquake? We have no other test. Thank goodness for the Van, Elazığ, Malatya and İzmir earthquakes and the Düzce earthquake. We do not know where it will be tomorrow. This earthquake we experienced showed that the inspection system soundly fulfilled its duty. In other words, the system was successful. We saw in Düzce that the better you carry out the implementation, the more you increase the quality,” he stated.
