Buildings with Building Inspection in Elazığ and Malatya Passed the Earthquake Test

Nazmi Şahin, Chair of the Building Inspection and Earthquake Engineering Association, reported that in the magnitude 6.8 earthquake in Elazığ and Malatya, there was no collapse, deflection or cracking in buildings that had previously received building inspection services.

Nazmi Şahin, Chair of the Building Inspection and Earthquake Engineering Association, made an assessment regarding the earthquake that affected Elazığ and Malatya to an AA correspondent.

Stating that this earthquake once again demonstrated how important it is to inspect the buildings people live in, Şahin said: "As building inspection firms, to date we have inspected 2,576 buildings in Elazığ, a total area of 4,935,096 square metres, with 17 building inspection firms, 3 laboratory firms, 196 expert architects and engineers and 433 assistant inspection-personnel engineers licensed by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation. In the magnitude 6.8 earthquake, there was no collapse, deflection or cracking in buildings that had received building inspection services."

Şahin, providing the information that in Malatya they inspected 1,963 buildings, a total area of 7,232,956 square metres, with 16 building inspection firms, 3 laboratory firms, 271 expert architects and engineers and 718 assistant inspection-personnel engineers, said that there was no collapse, deflection or cracking in buildings that had received building inspection services in the earthquake.

"BUILDING INSPECTION BEGINS AT THE PROJECT STAGE"

Emphasising that the primary aim of building inspection is to prevent structural damage from arising, Şahin noted the following:
"An effective and high-quality building inspection system means the implementation of a planned process that begins at the project stage and continues until the completion of the structure. How vital a matter building inspection service is has once again been seen in the earthquake we experienced. For the safety of our lives, our property and our buildings, we must avoid unplanned and illegal construction and act in accordance with the earthquake regulations. Ensuring the safety of life and property in a structure is not limited solely to the project and construction inspection of the structure. It also requires the inspection of the material to be used in the construction in terms of quality, durability and suitability."

Şahin added that, as a result of the examinations conducted in earthquake regions, it was determined that the damage occurring in structures arose from workmanship, material, structural-system problems and technical defects, in addition to ground problems.
