Nazmi Şahin, President of the Building Inspection and Earthquake Engineering Association, reported that during the magnitude 6.8 earthquake in Elazığ and Malatya, no collapse, deflection or cracking occurred in buildings that had previously received building inspection services.
Şahin made an assessment regarding the earthquake that affected Elazığ and Malatya to an AA correspondent.
Noting that this earthquake once again demonstrated how important the inspection of buildings is, Şahin said: "As building inspection firms, to date in Elazığ we have inspected 2,576 buildings, covering a total area of 4,935,096 square metres, with 17 building inspection firms, 3 laboratory firms, 196 expert architects and engineers, and 433 assistant control staff engineers licensed by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation. In the magnitude 6.8 earthquake, no collapse, deflection or cracking occurred in buildings that had received building inspection services."
Şahin stated that in Malatya they had inspected 1,963 buildings, covering a total area of 7,232,956 square metres, with 16 building inspection firms, 3 laboratory firms, 271 expert architects and engineers, and 718 assistant control staff engineers, and said that no collapse, deflection or cracking occurred in the earthquake in buildings that had received building inspection services.
"Building inspection starts at the project stage"
Emphasising that the primary aim of building inspection is to prevent structural damage from arising, Şahin noted the following:
"An effective and high-quality building inspection system means the implementation of a planned process that begins at the project stage and continues until the completion of the building. The earthquake once again showed how vital an issue the building inspection service is. For the safety of our lives, our property and our buildings, we must avoid unplanned and illegal construction and act in accordance with the earthquake regulations. Ensuring the safety of life and property in a building is not limited solely to the project and construction inspection of the building. It also requires the inspection of the material to be used in the construction in terms of quality, durability and suitability."
Şahin added that, as a result of examinations carried out in earthquake regions, it was determined that the damage occurring in structures arises from workmanship, materials, structural system problems and technical defects, in addition to ground problems.
